URBANDALE, IA—Youth pastor and recent seminary graduate Derek Myers prides himself on always staying up to date on the latest internet trends, memes, and news stories, which he incorporates into his relevant, timely youth group messages—such as the moving sermon he preached Wednesday night, titled “Jesus is the Greater Harambe.”
Explaining that the gorilla’s violent but necessary death for the salvation of the three-year-old boy who had climbed into its zoo enclosure was a “microcosm of the gospel,” Myers waxed eloquent for 25 minutes, illustrating in a series of well thought-out points how Jesus is the true and greater Harambe.
“Jesus wants to hold you close, and he was killed for it,” Myers passionately proclaimed during the climax of his message.
“To me man, it’s all about staying relevant,” the youth pastor told reporters Friday. “We’ve got to stay up on what the internet is talking about and use those stories and dank memes to preach the good news—how else can we expect to reach the youth?”
Sources reported that Myers’ message next Wednesday will be titled “The Resurrection: Here Come Dat Boi.”
